Sharon grew up in the Bronx in New York City with a Puerto Rican father and a Russian Polish Jewish mother. She had the fortune of being immersed in both cultures from a young age through exposure to food, language and cultural traditions. Her grandparents on her father’s side of the family moved from Puerto Rico to New York when she was in junior high school and lived with her, her brother and parents in their Bronx apartment for 2 years before finding an apartment of their own. Living in these close quarters with her Puerto Rican grandparents, she learned a lot about her heritage from her father’s side of the family and cultivated a stronger connection to her Puerto Rican identity.
Sharon moved to the San Francisco Bay Area after graduating college from Brown University with a degree in Art Semiotics - a degree where she combined the study of cultural theory with art practice. While she explored many different artistic mediums including printmaking and illustration, her art tools of focus were photography and film. After graduating from Brown, she participated in a few underground film festivals on the west coast in San Francisco and Seattle. While she still dabbles in making films (well videos now) and had a line of handmade housewares featuring textiles of her original illustrations screen printed by hand onto fabric, she has spent most of her adult professional life as a yoga and movement teacher.
Sharon has been teaching yoga and fitness classes in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2008. She is a 500-hour experienced registered yoga teacher (ERYT) with the Yoga Alliance and is a certified personal trainer with the National Academy of Sports Medicine. She enjoys blending the modalities of yoga and fitness in vigorous well balanced vinyasa yoga classes that incorporate a combination of breath, physical exertion, equanimity and meditation to serve the needs of your body, mind and soul. Sharon also enjoys practicing and teaching the more gentle modalities of restorative yoga, pranayama (breath work), yoga nidra (yogic sleep) and meditation. She has led more than 15 yoga teacher trainings and has served as a mentor for yoga teachers as they find their path to teaching.
At the end of 2019 she moved to Italy and currently resides in the city of Catania on Sicily’s east coast. She teaches public group yoga classes and private yoga and training sessions throughout the city, the surrounding region and online. She also offers weeklong international yoga retreats throughout the world with a focus on Italian and more specifically Sicilian cultural immersion coupled with the yoga retreat experience. Her next yoga retreat and cultural adventure is on the East Coast of Sicily from October 14th to 21st 2024.
